During the COVID lockdown, math competitions (including the Math Kangaroo) was cancelled. In response, the Renert math team created a new, elementary-focused math contest to challenge our kids. We continue this annual tradition of creating contests for Grades 1, 2/3, 4/5, and 6, with a focus on deep explorations of math at those grade levels. These competitions are carefully designed to be incredibly challenging, pushing even the strongest students to their limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I participate?
All Renert students from Grades 1-6 are automatically registered to write the contest during their regular class time. Bright Minds students can register using a registration link that will be posted later, and will write in-person on the weekend following the Renert School writing.
What is the format of the contest?
The format has changed slightly over the years. Currently, the test is 50 minutes long, with three parts. Part A is worth 4 points each, Part B is worth 5 points each, and Part C is worth 6 points each. Each unanswered question is worth 2 points, and incorrect answers are worth 0 points.
In the Grades 1 and 2/3 forms, all three parts are multiple choice (with 5 choices each). In the Grades 4/5 and 6 forms, Parts A and B are multiple choice (with 5 choices each) and Part C is numeric response (as n integer from 0 to 99).
The number of problems in each section depends on the grade level:

How hard is the contest? What is a good score?
The average score on these contests is typically around 50%. We try to make the contest challenging so that at the upper end of scores, we have a clear demarcation between places.
Part A should be considered easy, with most students finding success in solving those problems. Part B is more challenging, with many students struggling to find an efficient way to solve them. Part C is designed to seperate out the top students, and typically involve the hardest problems. The exception is the Grades 4/5 and 6 forms, where the early Part C questions are easier than late Part B questions, with the main difficulty being that students can't guess out of 5 choices.

We are striving to make the questions not require content beyond the curriculum, but at potentially incredibly deep levels. That being said, early versions of the test were geared more toward the content Renert students were working on in that grade, so may contain content beyond the curriculum. Content-wise, you now won't need anything beyond curriculum, but the specific application of the ideas can be quite deep or complex.
